The regulatory action by the India — Central Consumer Protection Authority against major e-commerce platforms like Amazon (company), Walmart — Flipkart, Meesho, and Reliance Retail — JioMart highlights increased scrutiny on online marketplaces for product compliance. This could lead to stricter due diligence requirements for these platforms, potentially increasing operational costs and affecting their seller ecosystems, while also boosting consumer confidence in product safety.
The India — Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) in India has launched a detailed investigation into major e-commerce platforms, including Amazon (company), Walmart — Flipkart, Meesho, and Reliance Retail — JioMart, for the online sale and promotion of 'Cyclosinone Herbicide', an allegedly unregistered agro-chemical product. The CCPA issued notices to these platforms following a complaint from the Crop Care Federation of India, forwarded by the India — Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, alleging that the herbicide was being sold without proper regulatory approval under the Insecticides Act, 1968. The platforms have since delisted the product and are scrutinizing associated seller accounts. The CCPA found serious deficiencies in product listings, including lack of disclosure of chemical composition, valid license numbers, statutory warnings, and Principal Authorisation Certificates, which could mislead farmers. The authority emphasized that e-commerce platforms are responsible for ensuring products sold comply with applicable laws, citing violations of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, and the Insecticides (Second Amendment) Rules, 2022.
