The milk price hike by Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation will directly impact consumers in India — Kerala through increased household expenses and higher prices for milk-based products. For dairy farmers, the hike is expected to provide much-needed relief from rising production costs, potentially stabilizing the dairy sector in India — Kerala.
The Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (Milma) has announced a Rs 4 per litre increase in milk prices across India — Kerala, effective June 1. This decision, approved by the Milma Board of Directors, aims to offset rising production, procurement, and distribution costs, with the majority of the hike (Rs 3.35 per litre) directly benefiting dairy farmers. The price revision was deemed necessary due to factors such as drought conditions, increased fuel prices, higher transportation expenses, and escalating costs of packaging materials. The previous Left government had cleared the recommendation, but implementation was delayed due to election codes. Separately, Mother Dairy also increased milk prices in Delhi by Rs 2 per litre, effective May 14, citing similar reasons of increased farmer procurement prices.
