The confirmation of a second hantavirus case in Spain among cruise ship passengers could negatively impact the tourism and cruise line industries, particularly for companies operating in affected regions. While authorities state no increased risk to the general population, public perception of safety in travel may decline, potentially affecting bookings and stock prices of related companies.
Spain's Ministry of Health confirmed a second hantavirus infection among Spanish nationals evacuated from the MV Hondius cruise ship. The patient, currently asymptomatic, was among 14 Spaniards quarantined at the Gómez Ulla Central Defense Hospital in Madrid since May 10, after being transferred from Spain — Tenerife. This new case was detected during routine PCR testing within the established isolation and control system. The patient has been moved to the hospital's High-Level Isolation Unit for specialized medical supervision. Health authorities emphasize that this detection does not alter the risk level for the general population or change ongoing epidemiological response measures. The first patient, who had shown symptoms, is reportedly recovering favorably. The World Health Organization was initially notified of the outbreak on May 2.
