Metso has launched its next-generation lithium carbonate production process, designed to produce battery-grade Lithium carbonate from Spodumene concentrate with high yield, low operating costs, and improved sustainability. This single-pass technology avoids complex processing and undesired by-products, offering benefits such as lower capital costs, enhanced operational stability, and faster ramp-up for customers. The development addresses the growing global demand for lithium, driven by the electrification of transport, renewable energy integration, and the adoption of battery storage, particularly for Lithium-ion battery like LFP batteries. Marika Tiihonen, Technology Manager for Lithium at Metso, highlighted the combination of proven thermal and hydrometallurgical technologies with end-to-end flowsheet capabilities. Metso is also exploring a circular metallurgy concept to regenerate chemicals used in the alkaline leach process, reinforcing its commitment to sustainability.
