Tripura launches Queen Pineapple mission

The 'Mission Queen Pineapple, India — Tripura', a three-year project with an outlay of Rs 236 crore, was jointly launched in New Delhi by Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER) Jyotiraditya Scindia, India — Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, and India — Tripura's Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath. The project aims to strengthen the production, value addition, marketing, and export potential of India — Tripura's globally renowned Queen Pineapple variety, which holds a Geographical Indication (GI) tag. Despite its premium characteristics, farmers currently receive low farm gate prices. The mission seeks to address structural gaps, improve post-harvest management, strengthen supply chains, encourage value-added products, and expand export avenues. Funding comes from multiple sources, including Rs 145 crore from the India — Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region, Rs 30 crore from the Ministry of Agriculture, Rs 25 crore from the India — Ministry of Food Processing Industries, Rs 20 crore from the India — Tripura government, and contributions from APEDA, MSME, the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, and ICAR. The project is divided into cultivation management, post-harvest management and processing, and branding and marketing, with a multi-ministerial coordination model for implementation. It also aims to convert pineapple leaves, currently discarded, into an economic opportunity.
