The decision by France to reimburse weight-loss drugs will significantly boost the market for pharmaceutical companies like Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly and Company, as it expands access to their products within the European Union. This move could also encourage other European Union countries to adopt similar policies, further increasing the market for anti-obesity treatments.
France has announced that it will begin reimbursing the cost of weight-loss drugs, specifically Novo Nordisk's Semaglutide and Eli Lilly and Company's Tirzepatide, for severely obese patients starting mid-June. This makes France the first European Union country to offer state-backed coverage for these treatments. Health Minister Stéphanie Rist stated that the annual cost to the state is estimated at 100 million euros at full rollout, targeting approximately one million eligible individuals. Patients will qualify if they have a body mass index (BMI) of at least 35 with one comorbidity, or a BMI of 40 or higher. The reimbursement will cover 65% of the cost, though most eligible patients are expected to receive 100% coverage due to comorbidities. This initiative addresses a growing public health challenge and is seen as a significant step in Europe's response to rising obesity rates.
