The release of this guide by Carbon Direct, with support from Microsoft and Stripe, is expected to standardize procurement practices in the rapidly growing biomass-based carbon dioxide removal market. This standardization will reduce supply-chain risks for corporate buyers and project developers, fostering greater confidence and investment in the sector, potentially leading to increased demand for high-quality carbon credits.
Carbon Direct, in collaboration with Microsoft and Stripe, has released 'Sustainable Agricultural Biomass Sourcing for CDR: A Buyer's Guide'. This guide provides a globally applicable framework for sourcing agricultural residues as feedstock for carbon dioxide removal (CDR) projects. It addresses the critical lack of uniform standards in the biomass-based CDR market, which accounted for over 95% of high-durability CDR contracted in 2025. The guide aims to mitigate ecological and social risks associated with biomass sourcing by establishing four core principles: traceability, community and worker protection, soil and environmental protection, and market integrity. This initiative is designed to equip buyers and project developers with concrete guidelines for due diligence and integration into offtake agreements, ensuring that carbon offsets represent genuine climate benefits and protecting against supply-chain corruption. Dr. Bodie Cabiyo of Carbon Direct, Philip Goodman of Microsoft, and Dr. Zeke Hausfather of Stripe all emphasized the importance of rigorous standards for scaling CDR credibly.
