HMS Vision, WMU Expand Eye Surgery Training

HMS Vision Inc. and Wenzhou Medical University announced the expansion of their HelpMeSee Simulation-based Eye Surgery Training Program at Vision China 2026. This expansion makes Wenzhou Medical University the largest operator of the HelpMeSee cataract surgery VR simulation-based training system globally, now featuring six advanced simulators. The program aims to increase training capacity in Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery (MSICS) and Phacoemulsification (Phaco), advancing cataract surgery education across China and the Asia-Pacific region. The collaboration, which began in 2018, combines local clinical and academic expertise with a standardized, instructor-led curriculum, ensuring high-quality education. This initiative addresses the significant surgical backlog in China, where an estimated 17-20 million people suffer from vision impairment due to cataracts. The haptic virtual reality technology allows trainees to practice procedures safely, enhancing readiness for live surgery, building confidence, and shortening training times. The expanded facility at Wenzhou Medical University will serve as a regional hub for developing highly skilled cataract surgeons, supporting the broader mission to reduce preventable blindness and improve access to vision-restoring care.
