The healthcare sector in Bangladesh, particularly private hospitals like Ad-din Medical College Hospital, faces increased scrutiny and potential regulatory changes. This event could lead to a decline in public trust in private healthcare facilities, impacting their patient volumes and financial performance. The compensation agreement, while significant for the families, also sets a precedent for future negligence cases, potentially increasing operational risks for hospitals.
Six newborns died at Ad-din Medical College Hospital in Dhaka's Moghbazar on May 27, possibly due to a suspected gas leak from an air conditioner or a malfunctioning air-conditioning system leading to a suffocating atmosphere. The Bangladesh — Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the India — Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) launched separate investigations. The DGHS probe found negligence and mismanagement by the hospital authorities, and their response to a show-cause notice was deemed unsatisfactory by Health Minister Sardar Md Shakhawat Hossain Bakul. Habib ur Rahman, a father of one of the deceased, filed a negligence case. Ad-Din Hospital has agreed to pay Tk 80 lakh in compensation to each affected family, though the criminal case will continue. The government plans to appoint a lawyer to handle the legal proceedings.
