The launch of the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R Flex Fuel is a positive development for the automotive market in India, signaling a shift towards alternative fuels and potentially boosting Maruti Suzuki's market share in the green vehicle segment. The government's push for ethanol blending and the development of flex-fuel infrastructure will create new opportunities for the energy and agriculture sectors, while reducing India's dependence on crude oil imports and saving foreign exchange.
Maruti Suzuki India Limited launched India's first flex-fuel car, the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R Flex Fuel, capable of running on ethanol-petrol blends from E20 to E100. This initiative supports India's goals of energy security, reduced oil imports, lower emissions, and enhanced opportunities for farmers. Union Ministers Nitin Gadkari and Hardeep Singh Puri were present at the launch, emphasizing the government's commitment to promoting biofuels and reducing crude oil dependence. Nitin Gadkari also urged other automakers, including Hero MotoCorp, to develop flex-fuel compatible models and convert older vehicles. Maruti Suzuki's MD and CEO, Hisashi Takeuchi, highlighted the company's broader clean mobility strategy, including BEVs, Hybrids, CNG/CBG, and ethanol flex-fuel vehicles. The government plans to establish around 5,000 flex-fuel retail pumps by the end of 2027 to support the adoption of these vehicles.
