India's Great Nicobar Islands Project

The Great Nicobar Islands project is an ambitious initiative by India to develop the islands into a strategic maritime and economic hub. It includes an International Container Transhipment Port, a joint-user Greenfield airfield and Naval Air Station, a township, and a power plant. The project aims to leverage the islands' proximity to international maritime routes, particularly the Six Degree Channel and Malacca Straits, to reduce dependence on foreign transhipment ports and strengthen India's defense presence in the Indian Ocean Region. The development is also designed to enhance India's ability to counter illicit maritime activities and serve as a first responder for humanitarian assistance. Environmental protection and tribal community safeguards are integral, with comprehensive assessments and conservation programs in place. The project is expected to generate over one lakh direct employment opportunities and boost tourism, with the new airport projected to handle 1.35 million passengers annually by 2040. The India — National Green Tribunal has approved the project, confirming adequate safeguards.
