The Nigeria — Lagos State Police Command has successfully dismantled a transnational criminal syndicate involved in a staged kidnapping and ransom fraud scheme, leading to the arrest of eight foreign nationals. The operation, initiated after intelligence on June 6, 2026, revealed that Cheikh El-Mehdi, a Mauritanian national, had contacted his family abroad in May 2026, falsely claiming abduction in Nigeria and demanding ransom. Zakaria Zawadogo, from Burkina Faso, reinforced these demands with threats. Investigations led by CSP Olabisi Kamorudeen to a hideout in Adiyan Town, Agbado area, resulted in the arrest of Zakaria Zawadogo, who then led operatives to other members, including Cheikh El-Mehdi and Suren Neta from Ivory Coast. Preliminary findings confirmed that Cheikh El-Mehdi actively participated in orchestrating the fake abduction, and Suren Neta lured him into Nigeria. The arrested individuals also include Koffi_Breno, Gondo_Treso, Kougasi_John, Hemue_Blinsi (all from Ivory Coast), and Kunuji_Ezekiel (from Benin). Commissioner of Police Bode Ojajuni commended the operatives, highlighting the increasing sophistication of transnational criminal activities and reaffirming the command's commitment to intelligence-led policing.
