Mitsubishi Electric and Finland — VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd. have completed the core development of a direct ocean capture (DOC) system, a marine carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technology. This system removes CO2 from seawater, which in turn promotes the uptake of CO2 from the atmosphere. The acidification-based approach (acid-DOC) allows for both carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) and carbon dioxide capture and utilization (CCU) applications. The collaboration, which began in late 2024, aims to integrate the system with existing large-scale seawater infrastructure to reduce capital expenditure and accelerate deployment. Both Mitsubishi Electric and Finland — VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd. are actively seeking partners for further demonstration and commercialization.
