The blockage of the UN designation for the Balochistan Liberation Army and Majeed Brigade by the United States, France, and the United Kingdom could be seen as a diplomatic setback for Pakistan and China. While the United States already designates these groups as terrorist organizations, the lack of a broader UN designation might affect international cooperation in counter-terrorism efforts, potentially impacting regional stability and investment sentiment in areas affected by these groups' activities.
The United States, along with France and the United Kingdom, blocked a joint bid by Pakistan and China at the UN Security Council to designate the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and its alias, the Majeed Brigade, as terrorist entities. Pakistan and China had submitted this proposal in September last year under the Council's 1267 Al Qaeda Sanctions Committee. Pakistan's Permanent Representative to the UN, Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, stated that these groups operate from Afghan sanctuaries and are responsible for cross-border attacks. The United States — United States Department of State had already designated the Balochistan Liberation Army as a Foreign Terrorist Organization in 2019, citing its responsibility for several terrorist attacks, including suicide attacks and a train hijacking.
