The Gulf of Guinea is a region believed to hold significant offshore oil and gas reserves, which has intensified the maritime boundary dispute between Ghana and Togo due to overlapping claims to resource-rich territories.

The Gulf of Guinea is the focus of the Combined Maritime Task Force, endorsed by the African Union's International===Peace and Security Council of the African Union, to provide rapid and coordinated maritime security responses across the region. Nigeria is committed to hosting its headquarters.

Nigeria pledged full infrastructural and operational support for the Combined Maritime Task Force in the Gulf of Guinea to combat transnational organized crimes and enhance maritime security across the region.
