The successful launch of Phase 2 of the Congo LNG project by Eni is expected to positively impact the global LNG market by increasing gas availability. This development also brings economic benefits to the Republic of the Congo and reinforces Eni's position as a major energy producer.
Eni has commenced commercial production from Phase 2 of the Congo LNG project, shipping the first liquefied natural gas cargo from the Nguya floating LNG facility. This milestone significantly advances Eni's strategy to expand its global LNG portfolio to 20 million tonnes per annum by 2030. With Phase 2 online, the Congo LNG project now boasts a total liquefaction capacity of 3 million tonnes per annum, equivalent to approximately 4.5 billion cubic meters of gas per year. The production is supported by gas resources from the Nené and Litchendjili fields within the offshore Marine XII licence. Claudio Descalzi, Eni's CEO, highlighted the rapid execution of Phase 2, which was delivered in record time, and the project's contribution to local economic benefits and reduced gas flaring in the Republic of the Congo. Eni has been operating in the Republic of the Congo since 1968 and is the country's leading producer of associated and non-associated gas, also supplying gas to the Congo Power Plant, which provides about 70 percent of national electricity generation.
