The significant gas and condensate discovery by Eni in Ivory Coast is expected to positively impact the energy sector, particularly for Eni and Ivory Coast, by increasing hydrocarbon reserves and potential for domestic energy supply. This could lead to increased investment and development in the region's offshore basin.
Eni has announced a significant gas and condensate discovery, named Calao South, offshore Ivory Coast in Block CI-501 with the Murene South-1X exploration well. This discovery is estimated to contain up to 5 Tcf of gas and 450 MMbbl of condensate, making it the country's second-largest after the Baleine field. The well encountered hydrocarbons in high-quality Cenomanian sand reservoirs and confirmed approximately 50 m of gross hydrocarbon-bearing interval. Eni operates Block CI-501 with a 90% interest, alongside partner Petroci Holding, which holds the remaining 10%. The discovery further expands the Calao channel complex and supports continued exploration and development across Ivory Coast's offshore basin. Eni has been active in Ivory Coast since 2015 and holds interests in multiple exploration blocks. The Baleine field, currently producing oil and gas, is expected to increase output with additional phases. SOCAR recently agreed to acquire a 10% stake in the Baleine field from Eni.
