The launch of the Wits-SAHLI facility is expected to positively impact South Africa's economy by fostering reindustrialization, job creation, and the development of a green hydrogen economy. This initiative, funded by Air Liquide, signals significant investment and technological transfer into the renewable energy sector, potentially boosting related industries and creating new market opportunities.
Deputy President Paul Mashatile officially launched the R100 million Wits Strategic Hydrogen Localisation Investment Facility (Wits-SAHLI) at the University of the Witwatersrand. This initiative, a partnership between Air Liquide, the University of the Witwatersrand, and the Localisation Support Fund, aims to position South Africa as a leader in green hydrogen. The facility will establish a modular pilot hydrogen plant on Wits University's West Campus, equipped with a 110 kW electrolyser and 200 kg hydrogen storage capacity, designed to bridge the gap between laboratory research and industrial implementation. The project is a key component of South Africa's Hydrogen Society Roadmap, focusing on cultivating domestic manufacturing capacity, developing a skilled workforce, and reducing dependence on imported technologies by 2028. Ministers Kgosientsho Ramokgopa and Buti Manamela also attended, highlighting the government's commitment to integrating hydrogen development into the national energy plan and building the necessary skills pipeline.
