This event is expected to have a positive impact on the renewable energy and aviation sectors, as it increases the production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) biofuels. It also strengthens the market position of Eni in the growing biofuel market and supports the European Union's decarbonization goals.
The International===European Investment Bank (EIB) and Eni have signed a 15-year loan agreement for €500 million to convert selected units of Eni's Italy===Sannazzaro de Burgondi refinery in Italy into a biorefinery. This project will utilize Ecofining™ technology and a new pre-treatment plant for waste materials to produce HVO diesel biofuels and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) biojet, with a production capacity of approximately 550,000 tonnes per year starting in 2028. The initiative aims to reduce the carbon footprint of transport, decarbonize the aviation sector, strengthen Italian and EU energy security, and align with the objectives of REPowerEU and the EU Renewable Energy Directive. This is Eni's second biorefining project backed by the International===European Investment Bank, following a similar agreement for its Livorno refinery, and is part of Eni's broader strategy to increase biofuel production capacity to 5 million tonnes by 2030.
