The report from OpenAI highlights India's significant growth in AI adoption and usage, particularly in coding and data analysis, which is positive for the technology sector. However, the concentrated usage in urban hubs suggests a need for broader infrastructure and skill development to fully realize India's AI potential, potentially impacting future investment strategies.
OpenAI released its 'Capability Gap findings' report for India, revealing that India is one of the fastest-growing AI builder ecosystems globally and ranks among the top five nations in advanced AI usage. The report notes a four-fold growth in Codex users after its launch in February 2026. Despite this rapid growth, AI adoption in India is highly concentrated in a few urban centers like Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai, with these top 10 cities accounting for about 50% of all AI users. This concentration is three times higher than in comparable countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Brazil, and Germany. Oliver Jay, Managing Director - International at OpenAI, emphasized the need to expand AI benefits beyond early adopters to the wider population, requiring increased access, skill-building, and meaningful use across the country. The report also highlighted emerging AI use cases in education and health in various regions.
